The Busy Mom Reminder: Slow Down Before the Moment Passes
As moms, we often wear so many hats that we barely have time to take one off before putting on the next. We manage schedules, careers, meals, laundry, activities, appointments, and a hundred little things no one else even notices. The days are full, the to-do list is endless, and the idea of slowing down can feel impossible.
But sometimes, the very thing we think we don't have time for is exactly what we need.
Recently, I found myself rushing from one task to another, already thinking about tomorrow before I had even finished today. The house needed attention. The business needed attention. Work needed attention. Everyone seemed to need something.
Then I looked up. The kids were laughing. A conversation was happening. A simple moment was unfolding that I almost missed because my mind was focused on everything else.
How many of these moments have we rushed through?
We tell ourselves we'll slow down when things calm down. When the season is over. When the project is finished. When the house is clean. When the business is established.
But motherhood teaches us a hard truth: there is always another season, another project, another responsibility waiting around the corner.
The dishes can wait a few minutes.
The email can wait until morning.
The laundry will still be there.
But childhood doesn't wait.
The teenage years don't wait.
The young adult children can launch at anytime.
So take the opportunity to sit on the porch, enjoy swimming with them, listening to a story, or just laughing over dinner. These moments don’t wait.
Slowing down doesn't mean abandoning responsibilities. It means intentionally choosing to be present in the middle of them. It means putting the phone down long enough to watch your child show you something they're excited about. It means taking the longer route because someone wants to talk.It means sitting beside your family instead of constantly serving them. It means giving yourself permission to enjoy the life you've worked so hard to build.
The truth is, the memories our children will carry aren't the perfectly folded laundry, the spotless floors, or the completed checklist. They'll remember the moments we were truly there.
So if you're a busy mom who feels like you can't possibly slow down right now, consider this your gentle reminder:
- You don't have to wait for life to become less busy to enjoy it.
- Pause for the conversation.
- Stay a little longer at the playground.
- Have that picnic .
- Watch the sunset.
- Take the picture—and then put the phone away.
The work will always be there. The moment won't. And one day, you'll be grateful you chose to slow down long enough to live it.
Because the most meaningful moments in life are often found in the pauses between all the things we thought were more important. So remember to pause today.
“Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10
