Memorial Day: Honoring Heroes, Holding Memories Close

Memorial Day: Honoring Heroes, Holding Memories Close

There’s something special about Memorial Day weekend. It’s more than the unofficial start of summer or backyard cookouts—it’s a time woven together with gratitude, remembrance, family traditions, and moments that stay with us long after the holiday ends.

For many families, Memorial Day brings back memories of sunshine-filled afternoons spent together. Mine memories are filled with picnicking and swimming at the local state park. It seems like the water was freezing but we didn’t care. We were swimming and starting our summer. Spending time with cousins is something I will never forget. The laughter we had echoed across the picnic tables crowded with family and friends, and children running barefoot through the grass. Those simple moments become the memories that remain years later—the moments of freedom and togetherness made possible through the sacrifice of brave men and women who served our country.

While the holiday weekend is often filled with celebration, Memorial Day also calls us to pause and remember the true meaning behind it. Across towns and communities, flags line the streets, flowers are placed at cemeteries, and families gather quietly to honor those who never made it home.

One of the most moving Memorial Day services I will never forget, is my husband and son playing an echoing “Taps” version on their trumpets. Just hearing “Taps” is something unforgettable but listening to the echoing soft notes drifting through the air as the crowd fell silent was incredible. Watching my guys step forward to play echoing “Taps” was especially powerful—a reminder that remembrance continues from one generation to the next. Their music carries both honor and hope, connecting the past with the future in a way words often miss.

Those moments remind us that Memorial Day is not only about loss, but also about legacy. It is about remembering the courage of heroes, cherishing the freedoms they protected, and passing down gratitude to the next generation.

As families head to the lake, gather around grills, or return to favorite traditions this weekend, may we all take a moment to reflect on the heroes whose sacrifice allows us to enjoy these freedoms. May we honor them not only with ceremonies and flags, but through the memories we create with those we love.

This Memorial Day, we remember.
We honor.
And we give thanks. 🇺🇸
